The suspect poisoned the children after a misunderstanding

Residents at Shama Junction near Sekondi in the Shama District of the Western Region, could not come to terms with the news of a 40-year-old father allegedly killing his two children aged between eight and three.

Eyewitnesses account has it that the alleged culprit, Mr Benjamin Eshun Committed the sordid act on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile the bodies of the children have been deposited at the Volta River Authority (VRA) Hospital for preservation and post-mortem.

Eshun is currently on admission at the same hospital under police guard as preliminary investigations suggest  he has drunk a poisonous potion.

Reports said, the suspect  poisoned the children after a misunderstanding between him and his wife, Madam Comfort Arthur,  who had threatened to leave him.

Sources again said that, Eshun,  after allegedly poisoning the two children, decided to commit suicide by taking in some poisonous substance but he did not die.

According to the reports,  Eshun became worried that  Comfort had lost interest in the relationship even though they had two children with the husband swearing that his wife would no longer have access to them (children).

Confirming the story, Comfort, who hails from Komfeiku,  told journalists that they both stayed at separate homes and that  Eshun used to pick the children during weekends.

She narrated that  Eshun asked her to return on Monday and when she declined the pleas, he warned that he would poison himself and the children so that he would have nothing to do with her family.

She said, on Tuesday, she reported the matter to the police, who quickly moved to the house at Shama junction and met the doors of the room locked.

“We kept knocking but he did not open so the landlord forced it open and he came out with the children alive. On our way to the police station, I realised my children had been poisoned and they started vomiting. We rushed them to hospital but they were dead”, she said.

Eshun, who was suspected to have taken some of the poisonous substance, was also found motionless in a supine position in his room and was whisked  to the VRA hospital where he is receiving treatment under police guard.
