Ghana Premier League return shot down
A number of key football administrators have voiced out in disagreement a proposal suggesting the return of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) soon.
President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, and some Ghanaian football fans are yelling for the return of football, albeit behind closed doors – in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the likes of board chairman of the National Sports Authority, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang and owner of premier league side King Faisal, Alhaji Karim Gruzah, haved all shot down that proposal.
Latest to add his voice to the call to wait until the pandemic is over, is former board chairman of Accra Hearts of Oak, Emmanuel Martey Commodore-Mensah.
According to him, bringing back football behind closed doors for cosmetic effect would rather deepen the already worse plight of the clubs than do them any good.
“I have heard many say Ghana should follow the German approach to bring back football. But left to me alone, I would say we should not go that way. Even with spectatorship, our clubs’ finances are nothing to write home about – let alone playing without spectators,” he told Accra-based Asempa FM on Wednesday.
Commodore-Mensah stated that he does not believe the solution lies in what is being suggested.
“If clubs are suffering during this period and would be playing behind closed door, what would be in there for them at the end of the day? Clearly, their financial situation would never improve so why go that way,” he quizzed.
For him, aside Hearts, Kotoko and to an extent AshantiGold, one cannot write home about any other match that can accrue that much money to pay salaries of players, bonuses and other expenses.
“Football administration is all about money. Some say it is business; in this case, one must take a decision as to whether to go on with the losses or fold up the business to reduce the losses.
“In football, the main income streams here in Ghana are player transfer, sponsorship, television rights and gate proceeds which is the most important. How many teams have sponsors; how many teams transfer players and get monies worth writing home about.
“It is only the gates that survives clubs in Ghana and also club owners dipping their hands into their pocket to support the clubs.”
He said these factors were directly opposite to what pertained in Europe.
“In Europe, the circumstances are different. For them, television rights, sponsorship and transfer of players can cater for their bills; but we cannot follow them and say we are going to play behind closed doors,” Commodore-Mensah stressed.
“Some have also mentioned the government stimulus package; that would only come good if it would be substantial and make up for the supporters income, else we should forget it now.”

Eleven Wonders thrash Bofoakwa Tano, K.A.C Academy snaps losing streak in Zone One
K.A.C Soccer Academy ended their five-game winless streak by edging second-placed Debibi United 1-0 at the Sunyani Coronation Park. Ahmed Abubakar scored a screamer in the 58th minute, securing all three points for K.A.C Soccer Academy.
Techiman Eleven Wonders extended their lead to 12 points at the Zone One B summit after a 4-2 demolition of former Premier League side Bofoakwa Tano.
They remain on track with an impressive 13-game unbeaten home record this season. Osman Zackaria scored a brace in the 26th and 59th minutes, while Albert Frimpong added another two goals in the 51st and 55th minutes for Eleven Wonders.
Richmond Opoku and Emmanuel Aidoo pulled two goals back for Bofoakwa Tano in the 41st and 75th minutes, respectively.
In a stunning upset, bottom-of-the-table Walewale Catholic Stars came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Zone One A leaders Real Tamale United at Winkogo on Saturday.
Wisdom Jonas scored the opening goal for Real Tamale United in the 16th minute, but Emmanuel Adongo equalized for Walewale Catholic Stars in the 59th minute. Abdul Ganiu Kamaldeen scored the winning goal for the home side in the 74th minute.

Aduana can cause more problems for Kotoko
“Getting back to the top of the table is difficult but not impossible, and it’s not over until the end.”
These were the words of newly appointed Technical Director/Interim Head Coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Karim Zito Kabutey, as he gets ready to lead his charges against Aduana Stars at the Baba Yara Stadium tomorrow.
Supporters of the Porcupine Warriors have the belief that the league title is within reach and are supporting coach Zito to give it his best shot beginning from the game tomorrow.
Kotoko currently occupy the fourth position on the league log with 47 points, six points shy of leaders, Bibiani Gold Stars, while Aduana lie 10th with 38 points.
Games between the Porcupine Warriors and the ‘Ogya’ Boys have left fans at the edge of their seats, and tomorrow’s game will be no exception.
Kotoko recorded a 2-0 away win in Dormaa in the first round against the then-struggling Dormaa side; however, with the coming of Romanian coach, Cioaba Aristica, a lot has changed since then, and tomorrow’s game will not be a walk in the park for the home side.
Coach Aristica, ahead of the game, believes Aduana is too good a team to be languishing in mid-table and hopes to lift them on the log beginning with tomorrow’s game.
League leaders Bibiani Gold Stars will trek to the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema to play as guests of Vision FC.
With their title aspiration firmly in their hands, the Bibiani Boys will be motivated to hold their own against the Tema lads, who will need to play above themselves if they are to pick at least a point from this game.
Today at the Accra Sports Stadium, Accra Lions will welcome Bechem United in a must-win game for the host if they are to keep alive any realistic chances of avoiding relegation.
At 6pm, under the lights at the TNA Stadium in Tarkwa, Medeama SC will host Young Apostles.
In other games tomorrow, Legon Cities play Heart of Lions at the Tuba Astro Turf, Karela United will stay put at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale to host Dreams FC, while Berekum Chelsea will host Nations FC at the Golden City Park.
Defending champions, Samartex FC, will face off with neighbours, Basake Holy Stars, at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena.
