Rev. Dr Owusu-Amoah speaking at the launch of the choral group

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched a choir group to promote choral music in the country.

The group, dubbed Revenue Choir, is made up of staff from the various divisions of the Authority.

It is the latest musical group established by the Authority following the exploits of the GRA Custom’s Regimental Band.

Launching the group in Accra on July 27, Executive Director of Salt and Light Ministries, Joyce Aryee commended the GRA for creating the platform for the staff to exploit their passion and talent for singing.

She explained that, choral music offered the staff the opportunity to share their talents with Ghanaians and the world at large.

She advised the members to strive for commitment, discipline and excellence to make the group successful.

“In order to succeed, you must incorporate some values into your operations. Commitment, excellence and discipline must guide all your actions and doings. These values will make you standout.

You’re singing for God and so you must demonstrate the admirable qualities of God. You’ve joined the choral group out of your own evolution, therefore your actions must contribute to its success,” Dr Aryee stated.

The choral music group, she said, could only realise its potential if it embarks on initiatives that would be relevant, both in Ghana and beyond.

She noted that, one of the key strategies that would ensure the group’s success was for members to educate themselves on music notes and other aspects of choral music production.

Dr Aryee said it was time for Ghana to take advantage of its choral music abilities to push that genre of music across the continent.

“You’re well-placed to do more for this genre. Let’s use this music to touch the heart of people in Ghana and beyond,” she added.

Commissioner General of GRA, Rev. Dr Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah, said the togetherness and cohesiveness of the group reflect the current status of GRA which was effectively putting in place measures to raise revenue for national development.

He advised the group to demonstrate the values of GRA in their operations and use their activities to further the Authority’s activities.

“Let’s work as a team to excel in everything we do. Exhibit professionalism, creativity, innovativeness and allow members to unearth their talents,” he added.

Alex Appiah Ackah, the Choir Master, pledged that the group would operate an open environment that would enable all members to be creative and innovative to help achieve its goals.

Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation –Pres.Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the misuse of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for personal financial gain by individuals in leadership positions.

Speaking during a meeting with Chief Executives of specified entities under the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) on Thursday, March 13, the President directly attributed the dire state of SOEs to their leadership, accusing chief executives, management teams, and governing boards of prioritising personal enrichment over organisational efficiency.

He pointed to bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures as factors draining public funds while SOEs continue to rely on government bailouts.

“Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation by appointees. The chief executives, management, and boards of these enterprises are responsible for this situation. Some SOEs have become perennial loss-makers, draining public funds with bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures while relying on government bailouts as if entitled to them. Many of these entities are at their lowest point in the entire history of the Fourth Republic,” he said.

President Mahama further noted that many SOEs have been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement, leading to consistent financial losses. He cited the 2023 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), which highlighted systemic inefficiencies and wasteful expenditures within these entities.

He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to reforming under-performing SOEs and ensuring they serve national interests.

He warned that loss-making SOEs will no longer be tolerated and will either be merged, privatised, or closed.

“I will assess you based on your performance. If you do not align with the pace of the reset agenda, you may be asked to step aside. If that adds to the horror movie, so be it,” he added.
