Maiden Ghana Cultural Week slated for March 11-15

Ghana Cultural Week, the flagship event of the Ghana Culture Forum aimed at commemorating Ghanaian culture and its place in national development is slated for March 11-15.
This year’s event would be the maiden edition; the celebration is extended for a week under the theme, “Cultivating Cultural Capital: Nurturing Ghana’s Legacy for Africa’s Renaissance.”
Since its launch in 2012, it has always been observed on March 14 every year through activities such as a symposium on a relevant, artistic emporium and others to showcase works of
Ghana’s cultural expressions.
Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Cultural Week at the Accra Digital Information Centre on Monday, March 4, Executive Director, of the National Commission on Culture and Director for Ghana Cultural Forum, Nana Otuo Owoahene Acheampong said, that before 2022, activities marking the Ghana Culture Day were observed in a day on March 14.
He said the quest to evolve the celebration and expand the scope of activities birthed the inter-school debate. The first
entertaining and educative debate was held during the 2022 edition of the Chana Culture Day celebrations.
“Today the celebration is being expanded to consist of activities spanning over a week and thus, the festival’s rebranding to reflect the scope,” he added.
The activities for this edition include a Fashion Dialogue on “Kente: Tradition, Modernity and Identity on March 11, an Inter-School debate on March 12, a Ghana Culture Day Symposium and presentation of the Africa Fashion Report on March 14 and a Film Screening and Dialogue on March 15.

Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation –Pres.Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the misuse of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for personal financial gain by individuals in leadership positions.
Speaking during a meeting with Chief Executives of specified entities under the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) on Thursday, March 13, the President directly attributed the dire state of SOEs to their leadership, accusing chief executives, management teams, and governing boards of prioritising personal enrichment over organisational efficiency.
He pointed to bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures as factors draining public funds while SOEs continue to rely on government bailouts.
“Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation by appointees. The chief executives, management, and boards of these enterprises are responsible for this situation. Some SOEs have become perennial loss-makers, draining public funds with bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures while relying on government bailouts as if entitled to them. Many of these entities are at their lowest point in the entire history of the Fourth Republic,” he said.
President Mahama further noted that many SOEs have been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement, leading to consistent financial losses. He cited the 2023 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), which highlighted systemic inefficiencies and wasteful expenditures within these entities.
He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to reforming under-performing SOEs and ensuring they serve national interests.
He warned that loss-making SOEs will no longer be tolerated and will either be merged, privatised, or closed.
“I will assess you based on your performance. If you do not align with the pace of the reset agenda, you may be asked to step aside. If that adds to the horror movie, so be it,” he added.
