Prioritise mental health issues at workplace

Discrimination, inequality, excessive workloads, low job control and job insecurity exposes workers to some risks of developing mental health problems, a Consultant Psychiatrist, Professor Sammy Ohene, has stated.
According to him, mental health issues among workers could also lead to absenteeism and ‘presenteeism’ which affects both the individual and the organisation
He defined ‘presenteeism’ as being present but not fully productive while absenteeism was when one is missing at work.
Prof. Ohene said this at a programme organised by the Department of Psychiatry of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on the theme: ‘it’s time to prioritise mental health at the workplace.’
According to the Consultant Psychiatrist, high workloads, tight deadlines and long hours can lead to chronic stress and burnout, causing fatigue, irritability, and decreased productivity, adding that work related pressures such as job insecurity, lack of control and workplace conflicts, could trigger or exacerbate anxiety and depression.
Additionally, he noted that strained relationships with colleagues, supervisors or clients can arise from mental conditions, leading to conflicts and a toxic work environment and that employees experiencing mental health conditions may struggle with concentration, decision making and completing tasks efficiently, thereby impacting on their overall performance.
He stated that individuals with mental health conditions were particularly at risk in unhealthy workplaces while those with severe mental disorders were more likely to be excluded from employment, and if they do get employed, they were more likely to experience inequality.
Prof. Ohene also identified being out of work, recent job loss and financial insecurity as risk factors for suicide.
Moreover, he indicated that mental health issues could also manifest physically leading to headaches, stomach aches, muscle tension and other somatic complaints.
“Issues that might affect one’s mental health includes excessive workload, poor pay causing constant pressure, stigma around mental health, unsafe or poor physical working conditions, under-use of skills or being under-skilled for work, understaffing and long, unsocial or inflexible hours,” he added.
Prof. Ohene indicated that in order to prevent work related mental health conditions, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended the implementation of organisational interventions that directly targets working conditions and environments.
He said these were interventions that mitigate, modify or remove risks to mental health such as flexible working arrangements, implementing frameworks to deal with violence and harassment at work.
WHO, he revealed, also recommends training for workers in mental health literacy and awareness to improve knowledge of mental health and reduce stigma against mental health conditions at work.
Also, he called for interventions for individuals to build skills to manage stress and reduce mental health symptoms, including psychosocial interventions and opportunities for leisure-based physical activity.

Your historic feat will open more doors for women – Della Sowah to Prof. Naana Opoku- Agyemang
Member of Parliament for Kpando, Della Sowah has congratulated Vice President-Elect, Prof. Jane Naane Opoku Agyemang on her new position.
Prof.Jane Opoku-Agyemang following the declaration by the Electoral Commission on Monday, December 9, 2024, became Ghana’s first Female Vicd President.
Congratulating her, Della Sowah, in a press statement issued on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, she noted that this would open many doors for women in the country and beyond.
According to her, she has inspired many others and become an example for other women to push for the ultimate regardless.
Further applauding the Vice President-Elect, Della Sowah said, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang entered politics in 2013 as a Minister for Education under John Mahama’s presidency.
This, she said led to some significant impact in the country’s educational system.
The MP Kpando added that as a former Deputy Minister for the Gender ministry, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s election marks a monumental step for Ghana in promoting gender balance and equality.
According to her it is exemplary for the African continent and an inspiration for women that they could climb the ladder to the top wherever they find themselves.
She also commended President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress leadership for reposing trust in Prof.Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Della Sowah concluded by saying she is highly optimistic, the first Female Vice President will make a significant impact and leave a legacy.

Dr.Bawumia concedes defeat, congratulates John Mahama
The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr.Mahamadu Bawumia has conceded defeat to John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
According to him, their internal collation reveals that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won decisively.
Addressing the nation on Sunday morning, he said, “Let me say that the data from our own internal collation indicates that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the elections decisively and the NDC has also won Parliament.”
“I have just called His Execellency John Dramani Mahama, President Elect to Congratulate him ,” Dr.Mahamadu Bawumia revealed.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the media, following yesterday’s presidential and Parliamentary elections, Ghanaians at home and abroad have been sitting on tenterhooks awaiting the outcome of the election.
Let me say that the data from our own internal coalition of the election results indicate that former President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively.
The NDC has also won the parliamentary election even though we await a final coalition for a number of seats. However, I hope I believe ultimately that these will not change the overall outcome. I’ve just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as president-elect of the Republic of Ghana.
I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of two things; Ghana will win and peace will reign. The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time and we respect that decision with all humility.
I thank God almighty for how far he has brought me and I submit to His will. I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country.
It is important that the world investor community continues to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana. These are our most important assets. Ghana is more important than our individual political ambitions and we must always put Ghana first.
We will take stock of events and pick lessons to guide us going forward. In the interim, I urge you all to look into the future with optimism and hope. We may have lost the battle that’s not the world. Let me also use this occasion to congratulate all MP’s elect with special emphasis on those from the NPP side. I would like to use this opportunity to thank His Excellency Nana Ado Dankwa Akuffo Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana and commander-in-chief of the Ghana armed forces for his support and guidance over the years.
I extend sincere thanks to the First lady Mrs Rebecca Akuffo Addo for her support and wise council throughout my tenure’s Vice President and during the 2024 electioneering campaign.
I’d like to thank my wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, who has gone over and above the Call of Duty in her support for me. My thanks also go to my children, my brothers and sisters and the entire Bawumia family for their support.
