Extras from ‘Arise Ghana’ protest

Day one of the ‘Arise Ghana’ protest which sought to highlight prevailing economic challenges in the country did not go as planned due to altercations with security personnel.

But the preparation and posture of some the demonstrators showed that they were in for ‘a good time’ before things took a different turn unexpectedly.

Demonstrators on danced to loud music

Prior to the tense atmosphere on Tuesday afternoon, some of the protestors who came from diverse backgrounds were undoubtedly ‘in their own world’ of fun.  Some of them, mostly young people, came with all manner of props and costumes while dancing to loud music from public address systems.

Apart from placards with various inscriptions, vuvuzelas, cement blocks, lantern and empty gallons, also conveyed their own messages as they wait to set off from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on the planned route march.

Our photography Lizzy Okai as the scene to capture some of the fancy moments.

An elderly woman spotted with empty gallon, for instance, said it was to prove the increasing cost of cooking oil while the lantern, carried by another supporter, was in search of developmental projects the government said it was implementing.

The uniformity of the crowd was complete with the presence of some physically challenged persons who managed to find their way through while some traders, as usual, took the opportunity to do business as long as the demonstration went on.
