Gender Ministry marks 2025 International Women’s Day

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP), through the Department of Gender and its development partners, commemorated the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) with a symbolic “Empowerment Walk” through the principal streets of Accra on Friday, March 7, 2025.

The event aimed to raise awareness and garner support for gender equality.Promote the protection of women’s and girls’ rights.

Celebrate progress made toward gender equality since the Beijing Declaration 30 years ago.

This year, Ghana adopted the global IWD theme,“For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” with the campaign hashtag #ForAllWomenAndGirls to reinforce the commitment to gender inclusivity and advancement.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, highlighted strides made in promoting gender equality, citing key initiatives such as the Affirmative Action Act and the establishment of the Women Development Bank.

She also acknowledged the historic achievement of Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Ghana’s first female Vice President, describing it as a milestone that inspires women to aim higher.]

The Minister further emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to empowering women by providing platforms for them to showcase their innovations.

She also assured continued support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence through the Orange Support Center and the BOAME Mobile Application.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Director of MoGCSP, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, stressed the importance of investing in women and girls for national development.

She commended women for their immense contributions to Ghana’s progress and applauded men who actively support gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In a solidarity message on behalf of stakeholders and development partners, the Country Director of UNFPA, Dr. David Wilfred Ochan, reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry to advance gender equality.

He pledged additional support to amplify efforts that promote equal rights and opportunities for women and girls across the country.

Concluding the event, the Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Faustina Acheampong,called for greater attention to issues affecting women and girls.

She emphasized the need to break down stereotypes that limit opportunities for women, urging society to recognize their vital role in national development.

The 2025 International Women’s Day celebration served as a strong reminder of Ghana’s commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
