Hundreds mourn former first Lady Theresa Kufour

The President, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and their spouses were joined by other high profile personalities to bid farewell to the late former First Lady, Mrs Theresa Aba Kufour whose funeral ceremony was held at the fore­court of the State House in Accra on Thursday.

Also in attendance were the Speaker of Parliament, Albin Bagbin, former President John Mahama, former Nigerian Pres­ident, Olusegun Obasanjor, the widower, former President John Agyekum Kuffour, the Clergy, Dip­lomats, Heads of political parties, ministers and sympathisers.

Delivering the Homily,Most Reverend Anthony NarhAsare, Auxiliary Bishopand Archbishop of Accra said Mrs Kuffour demon­strated the abilityto be powerful and yet tender, formidable and loving.

In President AkuffoAddo’s trib­ute, he described the late ‘Mama’ Theresa, as a devoted companion of President Kufuor throughout their 61 years of marriage.

“Her warmth, kindness and grace were exceptional. She bore the variations of life with great patience and an unshakable be­lief in the sovereignty of Almighty God. My wife, Rebecca, the First Lady, our family and I will miss her a lot.”

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor described his late wife as a goal-getter and was ever ready to do everything for the family.

Final funeral rites for the former First Lady was held at the Heroes Park in Kumasi.

Mrs Kufour died at the age of 87 on October 1, 2023, at her residence in Peduase.

Theresa Kufuor, who married former President John Kufuor in 1962, served as Ghana’s First Lady from 2001 to 2009.

Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation –Pres.Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the misuse of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for personal financial gain by individuals in leadership positions.

Speaking during a meeting with Chief Executives of specified entities under the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) on Thursday, March 13, the President directly attributed the dire state of SOEs to their leadership, accusing chief executives, management teams, and governing boards of prioritising personal enrichment over organisational efficiency.

He pointed to bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures as factors draining public funds while SOEs continue to rely on government bailouts.

“Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation by appointees. The chief executives, management, and boards of these enterprises are responsible for this situation. Some SOEs have become perennial loss-makers, draining public funds with bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures while relying on government bailouts as if entitled to them. Many of these entities are at their lowest point in the entire history of the Fourth Republic,” he said.

President Mahama further noted that many SOEs have been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement, leading to consistent financial losses. He cited the 2023 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), which highlighted systemic inefficiencies and wasteful expenditures within these entities.

He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to reforming under-performing SOEs and ensuring they serve national interests.

He warned that loss-making SOEs will no longer be tolerated and will either be merged, privatised, or closed.

“I will assess you based on your performance. If you do not align with the pace of the reset agenda, you may be asked to step aside. If that adds to the horror movie, so be it,” he added.
