Indiscriminate bush burning rampant in Northern Region

Military officer at the scene
Indiscriminate bush burning by young people in search for rodents is becoming very rampant and worrying especially during the harmattan season in the Northern Region of Ghana.
Most of these young people set grasses on fire in order to track the rodents to hunt them.
At the process, the fire escalates resulting in burning properties and goods in the area.
As shown in the photographs, these group were photographed on the Tamale airport road, burning grass in order to hunt for rodents.
It took the intervention of a military officer passing by to stop the group when the fire started escalating and out of control.
This has become one of the major challenges every year in Northern Region, despite authorities seem not finding lasting solution to it.
Annual bush burring does not only affect the environment and contributes to climate change but has adverse effect on human and animal health, social integration as well as the economic well-being of the people.
Most people have lost their properties, farmlands due to this back practice in the area during the dry season.
Speaking, the Northern Regional Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Manager, to Mr. Abu Iddrisu said, his outfit have been doing community sensitizing on the effect of bush burning in on radio and sometimes television, but community members keep ignoring the warnings.
He said, culprit should be prosecuted when found violating the law, tis will serve as a deterrent for other.
He also said that, the Ghana fire service need to me resourced in order to go around the various communities within their jurisdiction to raise awareness.
We are doing a lot of bushfire management and training of farmers who can really champion the principles, he added.

Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation –Pres.Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the misuse of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for personal financial gain by individuals in leadership positions.
Speaking during a meeting with Chief Executives of specified entities under the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) on Thursday, March 13, the President directly attributed the dire state of SOEs to their leadership, accusing chief executives, management teams, and governing boards of prioritising personal enrichment over organisational efficiency.
He pointed to bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures as factors draining public funds while SOEs continue to rely on government bailouts.
“Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation by appointees. The chief executives, management, and boards of these enterprises are responsible for this situation. Some SOEs have become perennial loss-makers, draining public funds with bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures while relying on government bailouts as if entitled to them. Many of these entities are at their lowest point in the entire history of the Fourth Republic,” he said.
President Mahama further noted that many SOEs have been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement, leading to consistent financial losses. He cited the 2023 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), which highlighted systemic inefficiencies and wasteful expenditures within these entities.
He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to reforming under-performing SOEs and ensuring they serve national interests.
He warned that loss-making SOEs will no longer be tolerated and will either be merged, privatised, or closed.
“I will assess you based on your performance. If you do not align with the pace of the reset agenda, you may be asked to step aside. If that adds to the horror movie, so be it,” he added.
