Can Oly’s wonder stop Aduana too in Dormaa?

• Maxwell Abbey Quaye - Oly’s top goal poacher

The much-awaited fiery game between arch-rivals Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 7 clash has been called off.
This is due to Hearts’ participation in the CAF Confederations Cup. The Phobians have been stuck in Algiers since Sunday (due to flight arrangements) after their disappointing campaign where they bowed out to JS Saoura on a 4-2 aggregate. Hearts were expected to arrive yesterday to restart their campaign in the domestic topflight.
However, action in the GPL continues at the Nana Agyeman Badu I Park in Dormaa tomorrow where imposing Aduana Stars take on ‘Wonder Club’ Great Olympics, in a dicey clash. The ‘Ogya’ boys will be eager to clinch their third consecutive victory with the visitors hoping to back back from their disappointing stalemate with Bechem United on match day 6. Doubtless, it is going to be a difficult task for Oly as Aduana would fight hard to avert another home frustration in front of their pet crowd – King Faisal having beaten them 2-0 early in the season.
On Sunday, Bibiani Gold Stars will welcome Bechem United to the Dun’s Park as they are willing to return to winning ways after a 2-1 away defeat to Dreams on match day 6.
The action continues tomorrow at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in Aiyinase where Karela United do battle with Accra Lions.
The visitors will be keen to record another triumph following their impressive victory against Eleven Wonders last weekend.
At the Accra Sports Stadium tomorrow, Legon Cities will lock horns with Berekum Chelsea. The away team will be aiming to snatch their second win after picking up three defeats, a draw and a win in their last five outings.
Playing in front of their faithful home crowd at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale, sixth-placed Real Tamale United (RTU) will face a spirited Medeama SC in another cagey affair. Medeama have won just one in their last five games and could use this test to grab their second.
All eyes will be embossed on high-flying King Faisal’s Zubeiru Ibrahim when Alhaji Karim Grusah’s boys lock horns with Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, hoping to strike gold again. At the same venue last Sunday, Ibrahim tore apart Kotoko’s backline as he bagged a famous hat-trick in Faisal’s 3-2 away win.
Ashantigold SC will make a long trip to Sogakope to face West African Soccer Academy (WAFA) at the Red Bull Arena – a game WAFA will push for victory, having recorded only a solitary win at home in six games.

Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation –Pres.Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the misuse of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for personal financial gain by individuals in leadership positions.

Speaking during a meeting with Chief Executives of specified entities under the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) on Thursday, March 13, the President directly attributed the dire state of SOEs to their leadership, accusing chief executives, management teams, and governing boards of prioritising personal enrichment over organisational efficiency.

He pointed to bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures as factors draining public funds while SOEs continue to rely on government bailouts.

“Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation by appointees. The chief executives, management, and boards of these enterprises are responsible for this situation. Some SOEs have become perennial loss-makers, draining public funds with bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures while relying on government bailouts as if entitled to them. Many of these entities are at their lowest point in the entire history of the Fourth Republic,” he said.

President Mahama further noted that many SOEs have been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement, leading to consistent financial losses. He cited the 2023 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), which highlighted systemic inefficiencies and wasteful expenditures within these entities.

He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to reforming under-performing SOEs and ensuring they serve national interests.

He warned that loss-making SOEs will no longer be tolerated and will either be merged, privatised, or closed.

“I will assess you based on your performance. If you do not align with the pace of the reset agenda, you may be asked to step aside. If that adds to the horror movie, so be it,” he added.
