The Eze Ndi Igbo of Ghana, has conferred a chieftain­cy title on Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Peace and Love Hospital in Ghana, for her con­tribution towards breast cancer awareness creation and survi­vorship in the country.

She is now recognised by the Igbo community in Ghana as Ezi Nne Di Ora Nma I, Nke Ndigbo Na Ghana which means good mother of the people.

Dr Wiafe Addai is known for her massive advocacy on breast diseases, especially breast cancer, in Ghana and Africa at large.

Through various initiatives of her outfit, many breast cancer patients have become -free and knowledge of the disease and its symptoms have increased in many parts of Ghana, especially in the rural areas.

Conferring the title on her, the Chief of Igbos in Ghana, Eze Dr. Chukwudi Ihenetu stated that Dr Wiafe Addai de­served all the honour she could get in the country and any part of the world because she has saved many lives through her advocacy and philanthropic activities targeted at reducing incidences of breast cancer and helping people survive the disease.

“This woman is an asset to Ghana and Africa as a whole. I have heard lots of stories about the way she has over the years provided free treatment for some needy breast cancer patients.”

“She is a heroine and deserves to be celebrated in grand style. People like her are rare. Ghana is indeed blessed to have people like her who have dedicated time and resources to help reduce the burden of breast cancer on families,” he added.

Dr Wiafe Addai who is also the founder of Breast Care In­ternational, a non-governmen­tal organisation (NGO), in her remarks expressed gratitude to Dr Ihenetu for the honour bestowed on her and assured that she would continue to give off her best in the fight against breast cancer.

Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation –Pres.Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the misuse of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for personal financial gain by individuals in leadership positions.

Speaking during a meeting with Chief Executives of specified entities under the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) on Thursday, March 13, the President directly attributed the dire state of SOEs to their leadership, accusing chief executives, management teams, and governing boards of prioritising personal enrichment over organisational efficiency.

He pointed to bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures as factors draining public funds while SOEs continue to rely on government bailouts.

“Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation by appointees. The chief executives, management, and boards of these enterprises are responsible for this situation. Some SOEs have become perennial loss-makers, draining public funds with bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures while relying on government bailouts as if entitled to them. Many of these entities are at their lowest point in the entire history of the Fourth Republic,” he said.

President Mahama further noted that many SOEs have been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement, leading to consistent financial losses. He cited the 2023 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), which highlighted systemic inefficiencies and wasteful expenditures within these entities.

He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to reforming under-performing SOEs and ensuring they serve national interests.

He warned that loss-making SOEs will no longer be tolerated and will either be merged, privatised, or closed.

“I will assess you based on your performance. If you do not align with the pace of the reset agenda, you may be asked to step aside. If that adds to the horror movie, so be it,” he added.
