Do not use sub standard cables – Electrical Contractors Association

Use quality cables
The President of Ghana Electrical Contractors Association, Awal Sakib Muhammed has cautioned the public to be extra vigilant when purchasing electrical cables for wiring and other purposes.
In an interview with The Spectator, he said there were several counterfeit and low quality cables on the market.
He noted that, while some sellers sold the inferior products to unsuspecting members of the public, buyers rather opted for the fake goods because they considered them easily affordable.
Mr. Muhammed said such cables could cause over-heating, electrocution, or result in catching fire or causing damage to appliances.
He said consumers ought to make their safety a priority by rejecting cables which did not meet critical safety requirements.
He explained that, some manufacturers deliberately reduced the required quantity of raw materials or added more than necessary during production just to make more profits damn the consequences .
“The Ghana Electrical Contractors Association is ready and willing to assist persons who need our guidance to buy from recognised shops” he said.
He advised that no matter how big the size of a building was or little the job to be done, it was important to insist on standard products.
The President of the Association said buyers should insist on getting value for their money and also cherish their lives to prevent needless deaths.
He said it was worth saying that only Certified electricians or engineers should be contracted to do jobs because getting a person who was not a recognised professional to do so equally compromised safety and standards.
“A certified person could tell a good cable from a bad one and advise you accordingly unlike an unprofessional who would go with anything “ he said.
Meanwhile, the Director of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited Training Centre, Engineer Aheng Owusu-Afriyie in an interview also highlighted the need to employ the services of persons who upheld standards.
He said the use of quality materials also ensured the safety of the contractors as well so it was important for the public to collaborate with the contractors to ensure that there was adherence to safety requirements.
