Extend network service to all parts of Kwahu …Chiefs appeal

Management of MTN Ghana presented a cheque to Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Paramount Chief of Kwahu Traditional Area

The chiefs and elders of Kwahu Traditional Area have appealed to management of the telecommunication giant, Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN), to ensure network coverage is extended to all other surrounding villages within the traditional area which have persistently been struggling for network service.

While commending MTN for strengthening their network and widening coverage to most parts of the area in helping to bridge the communication gap, the chiefs said some villages within the traditional area still struggled to have access to network services.

They made the appeal when MTN presented a dummy cheque for GH¢25,000.00 and airtime worth GH¢2,500.00 to some selected traditional councils in support of the Kwahu Easter Celebration.

The cheques were presented separately with the Kwahu Traditional Council receiving GH¢10,000.00 and GH¢1,000.00 worth of airtime out of the total amount. Obomeng Traditional council was also presented with an amount of GH¢5,000.00 and GH¢500.00 worth of airtime, Abetifi traditional council received an amount of GH¢5,000.00 and GH¢500.00 airtime, while Mpraeso traditional council had GH¢5,000.000 with GH¢500.00 worth of airtime.

“The people of Kwahu have been loyal to MTN for the past years, therefore, it is important for us to also appreciate your loyalty to the company by supporting the community at all times”, he emphasised.

He notified the chiefs and elders that nominations for this year’s MTN Heroes of Change had started until April 25, 2022, to reward individuals and institutions that had made significant impact in the fight against COVID-19 in the country.

Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation –Pres.Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the misuse of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for personal financial gain by individuals in leadership positions.

Speaking during a meeting with Chief Executives of specified entities under the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) on Thursday, March 13, the President directly attributed the dire state of SOEs to their leadership, accusing chief executives, management teams, and governing boards of prioritising personal enrichment over organisational efficiency.

He pointed to bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures as factors draining public funds while SOEs continue to rely on government bailouts.

“Many SOEs have been used as mere instruments for personal wealth accumulation by appointees. The chief executives, management, and boards of these enterprises are responsible for this situation. Some SOEs have become perennial loss-makers, draining public funds with bloated budgets, unjustified allowances, and unnecessary expenditures while relying on government bailouts as if entitled to them. Many of these entities are at their lowest point in the entire history of the Fourth Republic,” he said.

President Mahama further noted that many SOEs have been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement, leading to consistent financial losses. He cited the 2023 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), which highlighted systemic inefficiencies and wasteful expenditures within these entities.

He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to reforming under-performing SOEs and ensuring they serve national interests.

He warned that loss-making SOEs will no longer be tolerated and will either be merged, privatised, or closed.

“I will assess you based on your performance. If you do not align with the pace of the reset agenda, you may be asked to step aside. If that adds to the horror movie, so be it,” he added.
